Jharsuguda, Jan 31: A local court in Odisha's Jharsuguda district sentenced Praveen Dhooriya to life imprisonment today for the murder of Dhrubaraj Nayak, the former Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Sambalpur University, which occurred four years ago.
The Additional District Judge (ADJ) found Dhooriya guilty after reviewing witness testimonies and evidence presented in the case.
The crime took place on July 27, 2021, at Nayak’s residence in Kuanramala village, located under the Laikera police jurisdiction in Jharsuguda. According to the case details, Dhooriya had entered Nayak’s home, demanding Rs 100 to buy liquor. When Nayak refused, an argument broke out between them. In a fit of rage, Dhooriya attacked the former VC with an axe, inflicting severe injuries.
Nayak's family quickly intervened, taking him to a hospital in Jharsuguda. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries while being treated.
