Every year on April 11th, animal lovers across the world come together to celebrate National Pet Day—a heartfelt tribute to the joy, comfort, and unconditional love that pets bring into our lives.
Whether you’re a proud dog parent, a cat whisperer, a bird enthusiast, or even a reptile lover, today is all about appreciating those loyal companions who ask for so little but give us so much. From wagging tails to soothing purrs, our pets are more than just animals—they're family.
On this emotional occasion of National Pet Day, Prameya English spoke with pet lovers who shared moving stories of love, loss, and the irreplaceable bond they shared with their furry companions. One such deeply touching story comes from Tamanna Sahoo, an engineer by profession, who remembers her beloved dog Fluppy with teary eyes and a heart full of memories.
“Our Fluppy—our happy Dogo—was more than just a pet, she was family. For eight beautiful years, she filled our home with unconditional love, joy, and a kind of warmth only a pet can bring,” Tamanna shares.
Fluppy wasn’t just a source of happiness—she was a silent strength during the family’s most difficult times.
“During the dark days of the Covid pandemic, Fluppy stood by us like a silent warrior. Her comforting presence and unwavering loyalty helped us through our lowest points. She never needed words—her love spoke louder than any language ever could.”
But a few months ago, tragedy struck. Fluppy passed away due to health complications, leaving an emptiness no words can fill.
“I still remember that painful day like it was yesterday. What made it even harder was that the very next day was my sister’s birthday. For her, Fluppy was not just a pet—she was her child. Watching her try to celebrate through tears was heartbreaking. We weren’t just grieving a dog—we were mourning the loss of a family member. Wherever you are, Fluppy, I hope you're happy and at peace. You gave us more love than we ever thought possible. And maybe, just maybe, we’ll meet again someday. Until then, you’ll always be with us added Tamanna”
One such story comes from Rupasweta Anand, an Assistant Proffessor from Old Town, Bhubaneswar, who shares a special bond with her adorable dog, Simba.
“The name Simba itself brings a spark into my life—a spark I had been longing for over the years,” Rupasweta says with heartfelt emotion. “He came into my life and made me feel complete. Being a proud pet mom has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. It’s really hard to be away from Simba for 8 long hours every working day. But the moment he hears my car horn and rushes to greet me—his excitement, his gestures—they completely melt my heart. That reunion moment makes everything worthwhile, she says.”
“The unconditional love a dog gives is beyond comparison. Watching Simba grow—from a tiny 40-day-old pup to a healthy adult—has been no less than raising a child. It’s a journey filled with care, patience, and overwhelming love, she added.”
With compassion in her voice, Rupasweta also extends her love to all animals. “I pray for the health, safety, and happiness of all pets and stray animals. They all deserve to be loved and protected. Love you always, my baby Simba, said Rupa.”
Her story is a beautiful reminder that pets aren’t just animals—they're family, healers, and silent supporters who give us more love than we ever imagined.
Pramod Pradhan, an IT professional from Bhubaneswar, whose deep affection for pet birds has been a part of his life since his school days. Now caring for over 30 birds in his home, Pramod’s love for his feathered companions has only grown stronger over the years. His house is filled with the cheerful chatter and vibrant presence of a variety of birds, including Green Cheek Conures, Sun Conures, Pineapple Conures, and Cockatiels.
“ Since childhood, I’ve loved having pets around me. But over time, I gravitated toward birds—their colors, their energy, and their unique personalities bring me unmatched joy,” says Pramod with a smile.
For Pramod, these birds are much more than pets—they’re companions who brighten his everyday routine.
“Having a bird is like living with a tiny, talkative roommate who sings, dances, and brings so much personality into the house. Every morning, they greet me with cheerful chirps and playful head tilts that instantly lift my mood.”
Despite his busy schedule, he ensures that his birds receive the best care and attention.
“Before I head out to work, I always spend time feeding them, talking to them, and checking that they get the right nutrition—fruits, veggies, vitamins, and calcium. Their cages are cleaned regularly, and we even have a little ‘chat time’ each day. They may be small in size, but they hold a huge place in my world, he added.”
