New Delhi, April 15: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has formally taken cognizance of the recent incidents of violence that erupted in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district during protests over the Waqf (Amendment) Act.
The Commission, expressing deep concern over the seriousness of the matter, announced on Tuesday that it will be dispatching a team to carry out an on-the-spot inquiry.
According to NHRC officials, the decision to initiate a probe follows the receipt of a detailed complaint regarding the violence. The Commission noted that the gravity of the situation warrants immediate attention, and a thorough field investigation is essential to ascertain the facts and circumstances surrounding the unrest.
"The Commission has decided to send a team to the ground to conduct an in-depth, on-site investigation into the alleged human rights violations associated with the incident," said an NHRC official.
The NHRC further directed that the inquiry report be submitted to the Commission within a period of three weeks. This swift timeline underscores the urgency with which the Commission is treating the issue.
The violence in Murshidabad occurred amid protests opposing the recent amendments to the Waqf Act, with reports of clashes and alleged excessive use of force. The NHRC’s involvement now brings a national spotlight to the episode, highlighting concerns over the protection of civil liberties and public safety during demonstrations.
