Sambalpur, Apr 13: Police in Odisha’s Sambalpur nabbed a notorious criminal following an encounter while he was trying to flee after firing at them in the wee hours of Sunday.
The criminal has been identified as Sitaram Sarangi. More than 25 cases of murder, dacoity, and loot have been registered against him in various police stations across Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, and Sundargarh districts.
Acting on a tip-off regarding Sarangi, police conducted an operation near Rangiatikra to arrest him. According to reports, when the police surrounded him, Sarangi tried to escape and opened fire at the cops.
It prompted a retaliatory attack that left him shot in the leg.
Thereafter, he was rushed to Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences And Research (VIMSAR) in Burla for treatment.
The cops have recovered several incriminating items including a country-made pistol, cartridges, a bike, and Rs 1 lakh cash from his possession and seized them.
Further investigation into the matter is ongoing, said the police.
