Bhubaneswar, Ap 30: In a move that could transform public transportation in Odisha, Cuttack and Chilika have been shortlisted among 21 locations across India for a proposed water metro service, modeled on the successful Kochi Water Metro.
The initiative, spearheaded by Kochi Metro Rail Ltd (KMRL) under the guidance of the Central government, aims to replicate the eco-friendly, water-based transit system that has already served over 40 lakh passengers in Kochi within just two years of launch.
Feasibility studies are currently in progress to evaluate the technical and environmental viability of introducing such a service in these locations. The assessments focus on factors such as water flow, docking infrastructure, population density, and suitable propulsion systems for sustainable operations.
KMRL’s Managing Director Loknath Behera confirmed that preliminary assessments have begun in cities including Cuttack and the Chilika lake area. He noted that the first phase of evaluation has already been completed in Prayagraj, Varanasi, and Ayodhya, setting the stage for a broader rollout.
The project has also drawn interest from the World Bank, which is exploring possible collaboration to support the expansion of the eco-conscious water transit model across the country.
If approved, the water metro system could significantly reduce traffic congestion in Cuttack and improve connectivity in the Chilika region, a vital ecological zone and major tourist destination. Additionally, the service is expected to boost tourism, offer cost-effective commuting, and promote green urban mobility in Odisha.
