Dhenkanal, Mar 29: Green papaya cultivated by tribal women farmers in remote locations of Odisha's Dhenkanal now find themselves on the dining tables of London citizens. The indigenously grown Green Papaya from Odisha’s Dhenkanal district has witnessed a surge in international demand, with exports reaching London and Ireland.
This remarkable transformation is driven by the tribal women of Majhisahi, whose dedication to organic farming is not only boosting their livelihoods but also bringing global recognition to their village.
Under Saptasajya Panchayat, these women have emerged as role models under the Make in Odisha initiative. Their efforts have been widely acknowledged, drawing appreciation from government bodies and various organisations.
Known for its long shelf life and excellent taste, Green Papaya from Saptasajya Majhisahi, Sansailo, and Bhairanali is processed and exported by companies like Madan Mohan Agro Producer and Saptasajya Agro. With the support of APEDA (Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority) and the Government of India, 700 quintals have been shipped to Ireland and one ton to London.
Dhenkanal Horticulture Deputy Director Geetashree Padhi praised the tribal women for their contribution to organic cultivation. "People abroad are very health-conscious, and green papaya is in high demand. It is inspiring to see these women growing and exporting such high-quality produce," she said.
This success story has transformed the lives of women like Dumuni Tudu, Lakshmi Hembram, and Binodini Nayak, who are now financially independent through small-scale farming.
A single green papaya tree yields 40-50 kg of fruit, which is sold at Rs 17 per kg, significantly boosting their income and securing their future.
As Odisha’s green papaya continues to gain international prominence, this initiative serves as a shining example of women-led rural entrepreneurship, reinforcing India’s agricultural exports and empowerment drive.
