Pahalgam, Ap 24: The terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, tragically claimed the lives of at least 28 people, leaving the region in shock and distress. Following the deadly attack, panic spread across the Kashmir valley, especially among tourists trying to leave the area. As fear set in, demand for flights surged, causing airfares to skyrocket. Most flights were sold out, and remaining tickets were priced at exorbitant rates, making it extremely difficult for travelers, especially families, to afford an immediate return.

For instance, as of April 24, one-way economy class tickets from Srinagar to Delhi were priced between Rs 11,000-13,000 on IndiGo, Rs 11,000-12,000 on SpiceJet, and a staggering Rs 21,000-23,000 on Air India. Flights to Mumbai were similarly overpriced, adding to the financial strain on tourists desperate to leave the region.

In response to the growing crisis, the Ministry of Civil Aviation took immediate action. On Wednesday, April 23, Air India and IndiGo began operating a total of four additional flights from Srinagar to Delhi and Mumbai. This move aims to help evacuate affected tourists and provide relief to those scrambling to find affordable transportation.

Furthermore, the Ministry instructed airlines to maintain current airfares on the Srinagar route, ensuring that prices would not increase during this difficult time. To further assist travelers, the Ministry also waived rescheduling and cancellation fees, alleviating additional financial burdens.

Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu, who is closely coordinating with the Home Ministry, emphasized the importance of stabilizing fare prices amid the crisis. Airlines such as Akasa Air and Air India Express also extended flexibility to passengers with bookings through April 30, reinforcing the government’s commitment to providing support during this challenging period.
