Amitabh Bachchan, often hailed as the 'Shahenshah' of Indian cinema, has experienced a career trajectory filled with remarkable highs and challenging lows. The Rise and Fall of ABCL

In the mid-1990s, Bachchan expanded his horizons by establishing ABCL, aiming to tap into the burgeoning entertainment and event management industry. The company ventured into film production, event management, and even sponsored the 1996 Miss World pageant held in Bangalore. However, these endeavors did not yield the expected returns. Films like 'Mrityudata' and 'Major Saab' underperformed at the box office, and the Miss World sponsorship resulted in significant financial losses. These setbacks, coupled with operational challenges, led to ABCL's financial collapse by 1997. The company was eventually declared a failed entity by the Indian Industries board. 

Financial Turmoil and Career Uncertainty

The collapse of ABCL had severe personal financial implications for Bachchan. Reports indicate that he had to mortgage his iconic Mumbai bungalow, 'Prateeksha', to raise funds for his ventures. This period was marked by financial strain and a crisis of confidence in his professional life. Bachchan later described this phase as one of the darkest times of his career, where he actively sought work and even approached renowned filmmaker Yash Chopra for opportunities. 

The KBC Revival

Amidst these challenges, a significant opportunity emerged. In 2000, Bachchan was approached to host the Indian version of the international quiz show, 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?', titled 'Kaun Banega Crorepati'. The first season's success was unprecedented, with the show achieving a TVR (Television Rating Point) of 14.1, making it one of the most-watched television programs in India at the time. This success not only revived Bachchan's career but also reestablished his status as a beloved public figure. 

Sustained Success and Recent Developments

Bachchan's association with KBC continued, with him hosting multiple seasons over the years. The show's format, where contestants answer multiple-choice questions to win escalating amounts of money, resonated with audiences nationwide. Bachchan's charisma and rapport with contestants added to the show's appeal. 

In March 2025, Bachchan confirmed his return as the host for the 17th season of KBC, quelling rumors about potential replacements. In an emotional message during the season's finale, he expressed gratitude for the unwavering support over the past 25 years and hinted at new changes in the upcoming season. He stated, "I will meet you again in the next chapter. Believe in your hard work, keep your dreams alive." Amitabh Bachchan's journey from the financial challenges of ABCL to the triumphant success of KBC is a testament to resilience and adaptability. The KBC platform not only salvaged his career but also reinforced his connection with audiences, solidifying his legacy as one of India's most cherished entertainers.
