New Delhi, November 13: The Supreme Court's recent ruling on the controversial practice of 'bulldozer justice' has sparked a wave of reactions from political leaders nationwide, drawing varied interpretations and responses.
The judgment introduced strict guidelines, emphasizing that demolitions should not occur without due process of law, and aiming to curb arbitrary actions by the executive ( Officers).
Leader of the Opposition in Maharashtra, Congress's Vijay Wadettiwar, praised the ruling, describing it as a "slap" to divisive political tactics those are saying ‘Botenge to Katenge’, while highlighting his concern over perceived targeting of specific communities.
Similarly, Congress leader Mohan Prakash voiced fears about misuse of power, cautioning that the ruling might face resistance from the government.
In a more reserved response, Madhya Pradesh's Deputy Chief Minister, BJP's Rajendra Shukla, acknowledged the Supreme Court’s authority but refrained from immediate judgment, indicating that the state would review the specifics before commenting further.
In contrast, Om Prakash Rajbhar, who is part of Uttar Pradesh Ministery and President of Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party in Uttar Pradesh, welcomed the ruling, defending the government’s stance on demolitions as limited to illegal properties on public land, rather than private homes.
The ruling was a response to petitions against bulldozer demolitions, criticized for impacting marginalized groups.
The Supreme Court mandated a 15-day notice, clear specification of violations, and video recording of demolition proceedings, aiming to reinforce individual rights and ensure that demolitions occur only after lawful proceedings.
This verdict emphasizes the court’s stance on upholding judicial processes over executive actions, strengthening safeguards against arbitrary demolitions.
