They killed him in front of me": Wife of Pahalgam terror victim recounts chilling attack

Kanpur, April 24: As the nation mourns the loss of those who perished in the Pahalgam terror attack, survivors from the April 22 tragedy at the Baisaran Valley meadow recount the chilling events. Among the 26 victims was Shubham Dwivedi. His wife, Eshanaay, shared the harrowing details of the moment their lives changed forever.

“We had just ordered Maggi and sat down to eat,” she recalled. “Shubham and I were sitting together, and my father was in the bathroom. Suddenly, a man came from behind and asked us about our religion. He said, ‘Are you Hindu or Muslim? If you're Muslim, then recite the Kalma.’ We were shocked. We turned around to understand what was happening.”

The situation escalated quickly. “They asked me whether he was Hindu or Muslim. I told them he was Hindu—and they shot him. The first bullet hit him.”

Back in Kanpur, a heavy silence gripped Shubham’s native village as his body arrived on Thursday morning, casting a deep shadow of sorrow over the community..

Dwivedi said that Shubham's wife, who survived the attack, asked the terrorists to kill her as well. However, they spared her life to use her as a witness to convey a message to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The family had stopped at a restaurant 7 km before reaching the destination. While they were having snacks, terrorists arrived and asked about their religious identity. After learning that Shubham was a Hindu, the terrorists shot him in the head.

Recounting the horror, Dwivedi told, "...My son, his wife, and sister-in-law went to a place called 'mini Switzerland', which is at a high altitude, and we stopped at a restaurant, 7 km before that place. They were having some snacks when the terrorists came. They asked about whether you are Hindu or Muslin, and after that, they shot my son in the head. My daughter-in-law asked them to kill her as well, but they didn't. They told him that we are leaving you alive so that you can tell Modi about all this. We met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Srinagar, and we have told him what we want."
