The caves, perched about 1 km uphill on a rugged trail, are believed to date back 3,500 to 4,000 years. According to local legend, the Pandava brothers from the Mahabharata-Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva sought refuge in these rock shelters during their exile, giving the site its name, Pandava Bakhara.

The site is open daily from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, with the best time to visit being between October and March for pleasant weather. Visitors should avoid rainy days as the trail can become slippery and unsafe. Parking is available at the base, with a fee of Rs 20 for bikes and Rs 50 for cars. For first-time trekkers, it’s highly recommended to hire a local guide for a safer and more insightful experience.

A moderate trek through dense forest and stony paths leads visitors to the caves, with the effort rewarded by sweeping views of the Mahanadi River and distant hills. Adjacent to the hilltop is a tranquil lake believed to have supported ancient human habitation, adding to the location’s mystique.

Several caves in the area bear unique names like Dabarkhola, Tiger Cave, Chanchlani Cave, Kalia Taila Cave, Narahari Cave, and Anahat Cave. Artefacts from the Stone and Copper Ages have been discovered here, making it a point of interest for historians and researchers.

Pandava Bakhara remains relatively undiscovered by mass tourism, making it an ideal destination for those looking to explore Odisha’s ancient past off the beaten track.

Whether you're a trekking enthusiast, a lover of ancient history, or someone seeking a quiet retreat in nature, Pandava Bakhara offers a unique and enriching experience just a short drive from Odisha’s urban centers.
