Sambalpur, April 28: Authorities of Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) have taken disciplinary action against 100 students following a tragic incident at the Hirakud Reservoir on April 10. The incident involved seven students who went to the Fisheries area for a picnic. During the outing, a final-year Electrical Engineering student, Shashwati Bhui, tragically drowned due to negligence. Despite efforts by her friends to rescue her, Bhui was declared dead upon arrival at Burla Medical.
In response to the incident, the university has implemented strict disciplinary measures. Five female students have been instructed to vacate their hostel accommodations. Furthermore, some students have had their grades downgraded to an "F" and have been fined ₹5,000. In addition, these students are required to undertake social work under the supervision of the Dean of Students Welfare (DSW).
The actions were taken due to the students' involvement in a sensitive area, which violated university regulations. The authorities emphasized that the failure to follow guidelines led to the implementation of these disciplinary measures.
