Bhubaneswar, Dec 12: The Centre has set aside Rs 27 crore to support the conservation and restoration of Bhitarkanika National Park and its mangrove ecosystems.
As part of the Enhancing Climate Resilience of India’s Coastal Communities (ECRICC) project, Rs 16.43 crore will be used for mangrove restoration and plantation between 2020 and 2025. Additionally, Rs 5.12 crore will be allocated for developing wildlife habitats, while Rs 4.87 crore will go towards conserving mangroves.
The government has also released Rs 70.27 lakh for the MISHTI program, which spans four districts, including Kendrapara.
Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, highlighted the strong protection laws under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, ensuring strict penalties for any illegal activities like hunting or boundary changes. Bhitarkanika, a Ramsar site since 2002, plays a crucial role in preserving coastal biodiversity.
