The world lost one of its greatest leaders—Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the Indian nation on 30th January 1948.

His assassination remains one of the most tragic events in Indian history, marking the end of an era but not the end of his ideals. Every year, this day is observed as Martyrs' Day (Shaheed Diwas) to honour his unwavering commitment to truth, non-violence, and peace.

On that fateful evening, Gandhiji was on his way to a prayer meeting at Birla House in Delhi. As he walked towards the gathering, Nathuram Godse, a Hindu extremist, fired three bullets at close range, ending the life of the man who had devoted himself to India’s independence and communal harmony. His last words, "Hey Ram", are etched in history, symbolising his deep faith and humility even in his final moments.

Gandhi’s assassination was the result of deep-seated tensions in post-independence India. His relentless efforts to bring peace between Hindus and Muslims, especially his support for Pakistan’s rightful share of assets, angered certain extremist groups. Godse, a staunch nationalist, believed Gandhi’s ideals of non-violence and religious harmony were detrimental to the nation’s strength. However, history has shown that Gandhi’s philosophy remains one of the strongest pillars of peace and unity in the world.

The news of Gandhi’s assassination sent shockwaves across India and the world. Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, addressed the grieving nation, saying:

"The light has gone out of our lives, and there is darkness everywhere.

Millions mourned the loss of the Mahatma, and his funeral procession was attended by countless people, walking alongside him one last time. His legacy, however, did not die with him. Instead, it became stronger, inspiring generations to follow his path of truth (Satya) and non-violence (Ahimsa).

Even today, the world looks to Gandhi’s teachings for guidance in the face of conflict and violence. His messages of tolerance, unity, and self-reliance are as crucial now as they were during his lifetime. From civil rights movements to peaceful protests, his philosophy continues to shape the world.
