Bhubaneswar, Nov 6: Bhubaneswar is set to become the pioneering city for India’s first all-women community radio station, ‘Radio Blue.’ This groundbreaking initiative has been made possible by the Asia Centre for Development Communication and Research (ACDCR), which has successfully obtained licenses from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, as well as the Department of Telecommunications.
Radio Blue will stand out as the nation’s first radio station entirely operated and managed by women, marking a significant milestone in the quest to amplify female voices and foster gender equality in the Indian media landscape. The station aims to cater to both urban and rural audiences, with a dedicated focus on women's issues, rights, and aspirations.
India is home to over 520 community radio stations, with Odisha leading the way with 42 active stations. These community radios have received national and international recognition for their impactful programming, often winning National Community Radio Awards for their contribution to society.
In conjunction with Radio Blue, the ACDCR is also establishing a Centre of Excellence, the ‘Asia Centre for Community Media,’ in Konark. This initiative is expected to enhance Odisha’s reputation as a hub for community media excellence.
Kajal S, assistant director of ACDCR, emphasized the importance of Radio Blue, stating, “We are committed to serving both urban and rural communities, with a particular focus on women. The station will give a voice to the unheard, preserve cultural heritage, and inform communities about their rights and opportunities for growth.” This project promises to be a transformative platform for women and a valuable resource for the community at large.
