Kalahandi, Feb 2: In yet another incident of man-animal conflict, an elderly couple was trampled to death by an elephant in South forest division of Odisha’s Kalahandi district last night.
The deceased have been identified as Mugana Majhi (65) and his wife Gada Majhi (62). The incident has been reported from Kadomali village under Lakhbahali panchayat in the district.
As per reports, the couple was asleep when an elephant strayed into their home. Thereafter, the pachyderm destroyed their house. In a bid to escape the situation, the family members ran away from the spot. Unfortunately, the elderly couple was unable to escape and the elephant trampled them leading to their death on the spot.
Upon getting the information, Forest Department officials along with police arrived at the scene and seized the bodies. Subsequently, they were sent for post-mortem.
The family members of the victims have demanded compensation for the loss of lives and properties.
Further investigation into the matter was underway.
